One person was killed and a child wounded in three bomb blasts in northern Cairo on Friday, the Ahram Arabic news website has reported.

The bombings, the latest in a series of militant attacks plaguing the country, took place in the Helmeyet Al-Zaytoun area in the Cairo district of Ain Shams.

The victims have been sent to a local hospital as explosives experts cordoned off the site of the explosions.

Egypt has seen a spike in Islamist militancy that has mainly targeted security forces since the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

The violence, which the border region of North Sinai has borne the brunt of, has since killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers.

Smaller-scale attacks have also targeted the capital Cairo and other mainland cities, leading at times to civilian casualties.
