Gunmen on Wednesday shot dead two members of Egypt's tourism and antiquities police force near the Giza pyramids, state news agency MENA reported.
The attack took place in the Haram area, where the pyramids are located, on the western outskirts of Cairo.
The assailants fled the scene and security forces are searching for the suspects.
Attacks on security forces and infrastructure by Islamist insurgents have become commonplace in much of Egypt since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
Hundreds of police and military have since been killed in shootings and bombings. Civilians have also been killed in the violence.
It was not immediately clear what motivated the Giza attack.
