The Islamic State's Egypt affiliate, Sinai Province, has claimed responsibility for Thursday's missile attack on a naval boat off the Mediterranean coast of Egypt.

The Egyptian army said in a statement earlier that the patrol boat was chasing militants off the coast of Rafah, a town in North Sinai, and had exchanged gunfire with them. The boat caught on fire as a result, but the incident left no fatalities, the military said.

Sinai Province released a statement saying its jihadists had carried out a rocket attack on a naval vessel belonging to the "apostasy army" in the eastern Mediterranean.

The volatile North Sinai region, where Rafah is located, is an epicenter of a mounting Islamist insurgency that has killed hundreds of members of the security forces since the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

Earlier in July, 21 soldiers were killed after simultaneous militant assaults on army checkpoints in the North Sinai towns of Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah, prompting days-long fighting between troops and insurgents that left over 200 militants killed.

On Wednesday, the army said its troops foiled a suicide car bomb attack on a military post between Cairo and Suez. This attempt was also claimed by Sinai Province, Egypt's most lethal militant group.

Navy ship attack - Continuation
(3) Isis video published in Jérusalem post So ridiculous that talkbacks are laughing. As I said if Isis had a video they would publish it. But it's totally different from what they have photoshopped in the previous still pictures. First you see a huge missile flying over the sea in a dark dawn like sky. In fact it's not even the mediterranean sea. It's a file video from a norwegian missile test in the baltic sea. No ship visible. Then immediately following the initial scene you see a totally unconsistent scene: a far away ship under a blue sunny sky and floating on a blue sea. The ship is seen with smoke etc supposedly hit by the missile. Nowhere do you see the missile hitting the ship. And needless to say the silhouette has totally nothing to do with a Podgorny landing ship silhouette. The most likely explanation consistent with those evidences is that of the army spokesman. The Podgorny engages the terrorists - This ship is strongly armed with guns, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers to cover soldiers during assault landings. Also it's a relatively big ship. - During the battle it receives a hit of a RPG which generates some relatively minor fire- This ship (770 metric tons) is big enough that it would take a lot more than a RPG or an anti tank missile to seriously damage it. -

Much of the evidence is terrorist trick
Afatr thourough observation of the various pictures, videos etc it's clear that much of it is fake. I will review systematically every picture published: (1) BBC: the video shows clearly (sec 40 ..) that the ship with some white smoke around it is a Podgrony Class A landing ship of some 770 tons. This is very consistent with the announcement from the Army. Other ships are assisting the Podgorny and crew members can be seen on its bridge. (2) Still Picture by ISIS showing (1) the small missile in flight towards the ship (2) Big explosion covering the ship. Clearly a photoshop trick. The missile picture is either doctored or taken from a video. If Isis had a video they would publish it (2) the ship shown is much smaller that the Podgorny - Size and silhouette of a small cost guard vessel - In fact a file picture from a cost guard close to Sharm. ... continuation in new post ...

Miinture Subs
The smuggled thousands f rockets and arms is done by Iranian miniature subs. Coast Guard frigates should be equipped with depth charges to blast them out of water. Wakeup people to your fighting responsibilities.

Painful Mistake
I uncle served in the Coast Guard with onboard fast boats. Why you send terrorists a sitting duck as easy target? Shapeup people and battle hardened.

In caseyou don't know.......
The ship referenced above actually exploded ( it was carrying ammo ) with no survivors. Northern Sinai is too dangerous for troop and ammo transport. You should get more military assistance from the jews next door who know how to deal with the nonsense you are suffering in Sinai. Like it or not, you are going to have to become real friends with them or else you are both TOAST

True, Egypt needs Israel
The Egyptian authorities are lying about this incident. The ship was blown up by the jihadists.

There were survivors
Why would you say such a thing, when videos clearly show what happened: the missile, the fire, and rescues. I am quite surprised the Gazans have missiles like that. They keep complaining about a "blockade" but now we see, there isn't really a blockade, not for things the Gazans consider really important.
