The head of the traffic department at Nozha police station died on Monday after succumning to injuries sustained in a bomb attack a week ago, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

A military funeral is to be held on Tuesday for the late Colonel Hisham Al-Azab.

The bomb exploded outside Misr Gedida Courthouse in eastern Cairo last Monday. In addition to Al-Azab, a police major and one civilian were injured.

Explosives experts also defused a second explosive device they found while searching the vicinity of the building after the blast.

Militant group Ajnad Misr (Soldiers of Egypt) has claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on its Twitter account.

The Cairo-based group has claimed previous deadly attacks targeting police locations, including bomb blasts outside the presidential palace and outside Cairo University campus.

Islamist militants have carried out scores of deadly attacks, most directed at security forces, since the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi that was followed by a fierce crackdown on his supporters.
