Cairo's governor, Galal Saied, has said that no new retail licences will be issued to shops in the governorate unless they have surveillance cameras installed, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported on Friday.

Saied also said that licences for currently operating shops will not be renewed unless they also install cameras.

The governor has also asked all municipality heads and all parties concerned to abide by the condition to install cameras, in order to achieve greater security and contribute to the eradication of terrorism.

The governor's decision comes as part of a nationwide camera surveillance campaign to combat "crime and terrorism."

Egyptian security forces have been battling Islamist militants since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in the summer of 2013.

Hundreds of security personnel have been killed in shootings and bombings.
