The Military Prosecution has received official papers for complaints filed by 45 retired pilots against Egyptian thinker and writer Mohamed Hassanein Heikal.

The pilots, all of whom participated in an airstrike during the 1973 October War, are angry about comments Heikal made in an interview with Al-Ahram newspaper on 13 May, which they believe were defamatory to the martyrs of the war.

During the interview, Heikal hailed the role of the Egyptian armed forces during the October war but said that the significance of the airstrike has been overblown.

“Talk about the airstrike was exaggerated as an intentional fabrication to give a legitimate foundation for an entire regime, built on one incident that was completely taken out of context,” Heikal had said.

The case is being investigated.
