Four people died and 19 others were injured in a traffic accident on the Qena-Safaga desert road south-east of Cairo on Tuesday.

A microbus and a taxi collided on the highway, which connects the Nile city of Qena, around 450km south of Cairo, with the Red Sea coastal city of Safaga in the east.

The injured, some in critical condition, were transferred to Qena hospital.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), traffic accidents claim around 12,000 lives a year in Egypt.
