The deported Egyptians admitted they tried to enter the country illegally

Italy deported Saturday 22 Egyptians for illegal immigration, Egypt's state owned MENA news agency reported Sunday.

The 22 Egyptians arrived at Cairo International Airport from Catania, located on Italy's east coast.

A security source told MENA that the deported Egyptians admitted they tried to enter Italy illegally by sea.

In recent years, thousands of Egyptians have attempted to cross the Mediterranean in search of better work opportunities.

Hundreds have been arrested in similar attempts to migrate to Italy.

Many have drowned in the process.
