Egyptian security forces killed on Wednesday four alleged members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood who were wanted for their role in a number of attacks against police officers, Egypt's Ministry of Interior announced.

In a statement published on its official Facebook page, the interior ministry said that the four "terrorists" were involved in a number of attacks against police in Beheira governorate, including the murder of a low-ranking police officer.

The statement added that police stormed their apartment in Agami district, Alexandria while they were planning an attack to be carried out in Alexandria.

The four open fired on the security forces, prompting officers to shoot them, the interior ministry said.

Stacks of weapons and ammunition were found in the location, the statement also said.

The Muslim Brotherhood was designated as a terrorist organisation in Egypt in November 2013.

In a number of recent incidents, police have killed suspected Islamist militants during similar apprehension operations, saying they had to respond to fire with lethal force.

The statement stressed that the ministry of interior will continue its campaign of  "preemptive strikes" against terrorists in order to foil attack plans and dry up sources of logistical support.
