The lawyer of ousted president Hosni Mubarak claims that the former president was the first to support the 25 January revolution, which ousted him.

Mubarak’s lawyer, Fareed El Deeb, said that Mubarak’s speeches during the revolution show that he was supportive of the uprising and that the fact that he decided to step down on 11 February shows that he respected the will of his people.

“Mubarak is disappointed in the Egyptian people and spends most of his time in a coma, and feels that an unfair and vicious campaign is being directed at him,” El Deeb said while talking to media personality Moataz El Demerdash on El Hayat channel Monday evening.

The lawyer also said that Mubarak is shocked that Egyptians do not see anything positive in the 62 years he served the country.

El Deeb also revealed Mubarak is suffering from ill health and that the latest health report by the health committee hired by the prosecutor-general to assess Mubarak’s condition shows that he is at risk of cancer relapse.

El Deeb also said that he requested the Prosecutor-General Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud to have Mubarak’s German physician, who conducted a gallbladder surgery on him in March 2010, return to Egypt for a check-up. The lawyer also said that Mubarak is paying the fees for his treatment from his own pension fund, which has a total of LE 80 thousand (a bit over $13,000). However, he added that if Mubarak cannot pay the fees for the German physician, there are many who would be willing to pay.

“There are many people from Egypt who love Mubarak and would be happy to pay the fees,” El Deeb said.

Mubarak, he said, served Egypt for a long time, was given many awards, was the hero of the 1973 war against Israel, was an air force commander and the head of the Air Force Academy and his history is littered with heroic acts. He added the history of Egypt’s former presidents pales next to Mubarak.

“It’s true that Abdel Nasser, El Sadat and Mubarak all have honourable histories, but Mubarak is a national hero,” El Deeb said.

He also denied that Mubarak has any money hidden overseas insisting that he owns only LE 8 million in an Egyptian bank.

El Deeb’s statements earned him the wrath of many Egyptians who launched several Facebook groups against him including, “The people hate Fareed El Deeb,” and “Fareed El Deeb is the lawyer of all traitors and corrupt figures.”
