Inhabitants of the shantytown of Dueiqa are clashing with security forces attempting to evacuate them from land that they have taken over.

The police and the military police have been attacked with stones after they evacuated the area. The military police responded by firing shots into the air.

The Dueiqa residents claim they have a right to the land since they have not received their housing units, allocated to them in the Orascom project at 6th of October city, after paying their full price. Consequently, they decided to occupy the housing project next to it.

The clashes are still ongoing.

The shantytown of Dueiqa is located on Mokatam hill in east Cairo. The area suffered a rockslide in 2008 in which hundreds died and many more were displaced.
