EgyptAir has officially canceled all flights from Cairo to Moscow until further notice, following Russia's decision to halt these flights. Russia has not officially specified how long the suspension of flights will last.

Egypt decided on Friday to cancel early Saturday's flight and reschedule other flights for passengers after EgyptAir was informed of the decision via Domodedovo Airport in Moscow earlier on Friday.

EgyptAir’s decision came during a meeting Saturday night held by Minister of Aviation Hossam Kamal, which included foreign ministry, interior ministry, and national security representatives from Cairo Airport as well as representatives from the Russian embassy in Cairo, in order to discuss Russia's decision to halt EgyptAir flights to Moscow, MENA reported.

Egyptian authorities reiterated their question to their Russian counterparts regarding the reasons behind, and the duration of, flight suspensions.

The Russian officials said the Russian aviation authorities are studying the situation in the region and will officially respond to the Egyptian side as soon as possible.

Earlier Saturday, Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov said the ban on Egyptian flights to Russia was a result of the deadly crash of a Russian airliner in Sinai on 31 October, which killed all 224 people on board.

The officials at the meeting also discussed security procedures that are taken for Russian planes departing from Egyptian airports.

"We understand the stance of the Russian side and the exceptional, precautionary measures it is taking given the current circumstances that the world is passing through and the escalation of the terrorist threats.

"We offer help to the Russian side and to aviation companies that asked for special security procedures on their planes within the context of the Egyptian law, civil aviation authority legislation, and international laws governing this. That does not undermine Egypt's full authority over its territories," the civil aviation minister said.

The Russian authorities asked Egypt for a Russian translation of the operations manual for flights between Egypt and Russia. A translated manual was sent to Russia on Thursday, the minister said Friday.

EgyptAir previously operated three flights to Moscow per week on Saturday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
