Egypt's interior ministry arrested 16 members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood on Monday, a statement by the ministry read.

"In a preemptive security campaign, the interior ministry has arrested nine middle ranking members of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood group," the statement read.

Seven more members who have been targeting security forces and personnel from the now-banned group have also been arrested, the statement added.

None of those arrested were named in the statement.

Since the July 2013 overthrow of Islamist president and Brotherhood member Mohamed Morsi, hundreds of the group’s supporters have been killed and thousands put in jail.

The Brotherhood was designated a terrorist organisation by the Egyptian government in November 2013.
