Parcels being shipped to the United States via Cairo Airport by express mail service DHL were flagged by the company for further checks, but were found by Egyptian officials to contain no explosives, a DHL spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

"As part of our standard screening and security procedure, we identified a shipment today at DHL’s Cairo airport facility that required further screening by the authorities. The Egyptian authorities have subsequently informed us that the shipment contained no explosives or explosive devices," Bea Garcia said in an emailed statement.

CBS News reported earlier that Egyptian officials were investigating the possibility that some U.S.-bound packages contained explosives.

A security official within the ministry of interior said on Wednesday that there were no explosive materials found in any parcels being sent abroad through Cairo airport.

"Scanners suspected some objects inside one of the parcels, but after it was examined the authorities found that it was just some type of ink used for computers printers," the official said in a statement published on the ministry's Facebook page.

On Tuesday, a security source told Aswat Masriya said that two DHL parcels containing explosive materials were seized at Cairo International Airport before heading to the US through London.

The source at the airport said that the parcels, weighing about 10kg, were undergoing security procedures when the explosive substances were detected by the X-Ray scans which confirmed the presence of explosives.

Following the crash of the Russian airliner on 31 October in Sinai, which killed all 224 passengers on board, security measures have been tightened at Egyptian airports.

New X-Ray baggage security scanners have been installed in the departure hall of Cairo International Airport.

The United States has asked Egypt not to ship parcels, cargo, or mail on passenger aircraft destined for the United States starting this week.
