Egypt's Chief of Staff Mahmoud Hegazy met on Thursday Japan’s Chief of Staff Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano during his visit to Cairo, Egyptian armed forces spokesperson Mohamed Samir said in a statement.
The Japanese chief of staff is leading a Japanese military delegation on a tour of the Middle East.
Lt.General Hegazy discussed with Admiral Kawano the latest developments in the Middle East region as well Egyptian-Japanese military bilateral relations and cooperation.
Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano expressed the importance of military cooperation with the Egyptian armed forces.
Following Japan's defeat in the WWII, the 1947 constitution outlawed war as a means to settle international disputes involving the state.
This constitutional stipulation has limited the role of the army in Japan for nearly 70 years.
However, in recent years, there has been a debate inside Japan regarding a role for the country's Self-Defence Forces outside the Japanese borders.
