The commander of Egypt's naval forces, Rear Admiral Osama Mounir, attended in Hamburg, Germany the inauguration of a German-built Egyptian submarine on Thursday, according to the Egyptian Armed Forces spokesperson.

This is Egypt's first Type-209/1400 submarine with the latest technology installed for this type of vessel.

Egypt had signed the deal with Berlin to buy two German-made Type-209 submarines in 2011, and then ordered two more in 2014.

The submarine was built by the German ThyseenKrupp Marine System.

In his speech at the inauguration, Mounir stated that this "great technological addition" to Egypt 's navy will further its capability to bolster Egyptian national security.

The inauguration of the submarine was attended by the German Navy Vice Admiral Rainer Brinkmann, Egypt's ambassador to Germany Badr Abdel-Atti, as well the Egyptian consul in Hamburg and a number of German and Egyptian military officials.

Good Addition to Security
I understand the other posters' criticism about this purchase, however, I disagree specifically concerning this purchase. Sure, some of the military's recent purchases appear to have no connection to Egyptian strategic or tactical needs, such as the 2 Mistral helicopter carriers. However, the purchase of this submarine and 3 others is an excellent addition for Egypt. I only wish the money spent on the Mistrals was used to purchase even more subs. I fully support Egypt's efforts to modernize its navy. Egypt needs ships to be able to patrol & defend the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea all the way to the Bab al Mandab, and Straits of Tiran. I would like to see Egypt have upto 16 submarines to secure Egypt's waters. I also would like to see Egypt produce its own navy ships in Egypt someday. It only makes sense for Egypt to be a strong naval power considering it sits at the center of the worlds most important shipping routes. This is Egypt's power.

Better by the dozen
Sounds like one of those visionary military experts. Perhaps buying them by the dozen, like eggplant, would offer Egypt more security in Saini and at airports!

Sixteen is just not enough
Why only sixteen? Double the number and it is a deal! Egyptians are too eager to go without bread and bed if only our grat military has shiny toys to play with.

urgently needed
It was quite obvious back then in 2011 that the most urgent need of our nation was a brand new submarine. What's next on our beloved military's shopping list? B29, more tanks, drones (but not from Israel), space shuttles? I suggest some automatic torture machine to be rented out to the police. That would spare the police a lot of unfounded claims of wrongdoing.

No doubt the vessel looks like a submarine
..and the weather looks typical german, too. But the colour of the 'flag' decoration? Blue - white - red??

4 weeks too late
This great sub would have been ideal if it had arrived in Alexandria 4 weeks ago. The street flooding caused by corruption, incompetence, and bankruptcy would have been great waterways for this great sub, paid for by that bankruptcy! By the way which part of fighting primitive Egyptian terrorists can be addressed with this sub General Sisi?
