A fire in the cockpit of an EgyptAir aeroplane could have resulted in catastrophe at Cairo Airport but the jet was evacuated before the takeoff.
An electric fire broke out in the cockpit of an EgyptAir Boeing 777 heading to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Friday. According to Cairo Airport officials speaking on condition of anonymity, the pilot discovered the fire in time to evacuate the plane. Some 300 passengers on their way to perform Umrah or the Lesser Pilgrimage off-boarded unharmed; their luggage remained intact. According to AP, however, two fire fighters were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.
