It is uncertain whether the killing had political or criminal motivations

Unknown assailants on Tuesday killed a policeman in the governorate of Beni Suef, 100 km (62miles) south of Cairo, Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Two masked gunmen on opened fire on Diyab Abdel Latif, a 48-year-old policeman with National Security while he was driving his motorbike home.

He later died in hospital.

It was not immediately clear if the attack has criminal or political motivations.

Egypt has been battling an Islamist insurgency, mainly based in the North Sinai region, which has killed hundreds of police and troops since the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

Militant group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, which swore allegiance to the militant Islamic State group in November 2014, has claimed responsibility for some of the deadliest attacks in Egypt, including the downing of a Russian passenger plane last month over Sinai, where all 224 passengers and staff were killed.
