An electricity transformer near downtown Cairo exploded on Tuesday with no injuries reported, according to Egypt's interior ministry spokesperson Abu Bakr Abdel-Kerim.

It is not yet clear whether the explosion was accidental or the result of an attack.

The blast was heard by residents in the Abdin area, who were quick to post about it on social media.

A security cordon has been established around the scene of the explosion and investigations are underway.
