An ambulance transferring conscripts from an earlier attack in North Sinai's El-Shadaid on Sunday was shot at by unknown assailants, killing one paramedic, Ambulance Authority head Ahmed El-Ansary told Ahram Online.

A security source told Aswat Masriya that earlier in the day an explosive device detonated while a police vehicle was passing by in Sheikh Zuweid, killing two conscripts and injuring another.

It's unclear whether the gunmen who targeted the ambulance were also behind the earlier attack.

The attack comes only a few days after unknown assailants targeted an ambulance in North Sinai's El-Arish, wounding two paramedics, who sustained minor injuries.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Egypt's army has been fighting an Islamist insurgency in parts of North Sinai, which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of militants and members of security forces.

Earlier on Sunday, Egypt's army spokesperson said that the army killed five “terrorist elements” in a shootout at a security checkpoint in Sheikh Zuweid after assailants reportedly opened fire on the troops.
