Egyptian journalists set a number of demands including the sacking of the interior minister during a Wednesday general assembly meeting attended by over 2,000 members at the union's headquarters in downtown Cairo.

The Press Syndicate said it is giving the government one-week notice to meet its demands.

On Sunday, police had stormed on Sunday the union's building to arrest two journalists, sparking anger among journalists.

The union also called on all papers to display a logo that reads "no for for silencing," in reference to a gag order imposed Tuesday by the country's top prosecutor on publishing in the arrest of the journalists. The general assembly agreed to immediately take "legal measures" against the order.
