The families of the army officers who were arrested in Tahrir Square on 9 April and have now been sentenced to ten years in prison demonstrated in Tahrir today.

Carrying photos of the detained officers and callng for their release, the families said they were respectable officers who went to Tahrir to express their love of their country on their day off, not – as was repeatedly claimed – to attempt a military coup.

The families said they were promised by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces that the officers would be pardoned but are still waiting for their release.

They also condemned the recent Maspero clashes and called for those responsible to be tried as soon as possible, saying that Muslims and Christians in the country are unified and accusing “infiltrators” of starting the violence.
