Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi announced on Tuesday that he will be running for re-election in 2018 "if it is the will of the Egyptian people," a statement read on his official Facebook page.

"I can never fail to respond to the will of Egyptians. I am subject to the will of the Egyptian people," El-Sisi in the statement.

The quote published on the president’s Facebook page is part of an interview he gave to national newspapers yet to published on Wednesday.

This is the first time the president has talked publicly about the possibility of running in the 2018 presidential elections.

El-Sisi was elected president in May 2014 for a four-year term, and can hold office for one more term if re-elected according to the Egyptian constitution.
