Egypt’s Coptic patriarch, Pope Shenouda III, met today with the country's minister of information. The two men discussed the coverage by state media of the violent Maspero clashes on 9 October.
Minister Osama Heikal assured the pope that the media's coverage of the clashes constitutes “professional misconduct."
The minister's comments come after Egyptian state TV was sharply criticised for inciting hatred against Coptic Christians during last week’s clashes between protesters and the army. During the night, TV anchors urged viewers to go defend the Egyptian army from Coptic "attacks,” leading to attacks on Christians throughout the night.
