A Giza criminal court sentenced to prison on Wednesday two police officers and four lower ranking police officers for torturing a man to death in a police station in late 2012.

The court sentenced the deputy head of the investigation unit at Giza Police Station to five years and the station's deputy head to one year.

Meanwhile, the four lower ranking policemen received three years in prison each.

The rulings can be appealed.

The policemen were convicted of torturing to death 26-year-old Saad Saeed after what the prosecution says was an unwarranted arrest in November 2012.

The medical examiner's report showed that the Saeed died of severe beating.

The Egyptian constitution stipulates that "torture in all its forms is a crime without a statute of limitations."

Over the past two years,  authorities have referred a number of policemen to trial in similar cases of torturing citizens to deaths.
