Aswan is still tense amid violent clashes with the police after a policeman shot a Nubian boatman

Hundreds of Nubians are planning a mass rally in Aswan Sunday, protesting the shooting of a Nubian boatman, Mohamed Helal, by a policeman on Sunday, 6 November. He died from his wounds Saturday evening.

Protesters are expected to march to the Aswan Security Directorate building, where they gathered early Sunday morning but were dispersed after police forces fired teargas at the protest.

Continuing the violence seen since the early hours of Sunday morning, angered citizens in Aswan raided two police recreation clubs. Looters ransacked the clubs, and other establishments, amid the chaos.

Police forces have cordoned off vital buildings in Aswan and reportedly arrested some of the looters, as protesters for their part blocked the road lining the Nile River.

Helal's funeral was held in an Aswan village Sunday morning in an air of tension as result of the clashes. One of Helal's relatives said that this is the third time in a few months that a Nubian citizen is shot by a police officer.

The security situation in Aswan remains unstable.
