A high-profile governmental official told Ahram’s Arabic website that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) would rather keep the interim government of Prime Minister Essam Sharaf in charge.

Protesters in Tahrir Square have been calling on the ruling military council and the Essam Sharaf-led government to step down, demanding that power be handed over to a national salvation government.

The source said the fate of the current government is now in the hands of the political parties and groups, who are meeting with Field Marshal and de-facto president Hussein Tantawi to reach an agreement on how to deal with the current crisis.

Tantawi will be giving a televised address to nation, according to Egyptian State TV.
