One person died and dozens of shops and houses were destroyed after a massive fire erupted in a market in the city of Edfu in Egypt's Aswan governorate early Wednesday morning, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

The 70-year-old victim died of a heart attack after his shop was destroyed in the fire.

Nine civil protection conscripts suffered from smoke inhalation during efforts to put out the blaze, according to the Ministry of Health.

The effort to contain the fire involved 25 fire engines aided by an army helicopter.

The health directorate in Aswan governorate dispatched 28 ambulances to help the injured.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
