Journalist Mohamed El-Batawi
Egyptian journalist from state-owned newspaper Al-Akhbar Mohamed El-Battawi has been released from prison after spending over two years in jail over accusations of joining the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood organisation, press syndicate board member Amr Badr told Ahram Online on Tuesday.
El-Battawi was arrested in June 2015, with his detention renewed periodically pending investigation.
He was released after exceeding the maximum two-year period of detention without trial allowed by law.
“The journalist has been transferred to El-Khalifa police department in Cairo on Monday night pending official release procedures,” Badr said.
El-Battawi has been a member of the Egyptian Press Syndicate since 2007.
The Muslim Brotherhood was designated a terrorist group in Egypt in 2013.
