One person was killed and 27 injured when two microbuses collided on the Matrouh-Alexandria highway in northern Egypt on Friday morning, state news agency MENA reported.

The prosecution has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, while the injured were transferred to hospital

Deadly road crashes take place on a near daily basis in Egypt, and are attributed to poor road safety, badly maintained infrastructure, and loosely enforced traffic regulations.

According to the World Health Organization, Egypt loses about 12,000 lives due to traffic accidents every year.
