Egypt has strongly condemned the beheading of 11 people in the Libyan desert on Wednesday in an attack claimed by Daesh, the foreign ministry said in a statement late on Wednesday.
Nine soldiers and two civilians were beheaded at dawn in an attack on a checkpoint manned by forces of Libyan military strongman Khalifa
Haftar in the Al-Jufra region, around 500 kilometres south of Tripoli.
Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack via its Amaq channel.
Cairo affirmed its support for Libya's government and people in the "fight against terrorism."
Libya has plunged into chaos since the 2011 fall of longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi in a NATO-backed revolt.
Cairo added that will continue to support its western neighbour until it “reaches national unity and rebuilds state institutions.”
