A Giza criminal court has sentenced four defendants to death after they were convicted for murder after setting a fire at a restaurant in Giza’s Agouza district that killed 17 people in 2015.

The verdict has been referred to Egypt's Grand Mufti for his non-binding opinion as per Egypt’s penal code.

In December 2015, the defendants hurled Molotov cocktails into the Al-Sayyad restaurant and bar over a dispute they had with employees.

Investigations revealed that the emergency exit door was chained shut, contributing to the high death toll, according to the prosecution.

Following their arrest, the suspects told police that they had been denied entry to the restaurant by security guards the night before the attack, and had launched the assault in retaliation.

All the victims were employees at the club.
