The Egyptian foreign ministry announced on Monday that it had received an official invitation from Russia to participate in the Syrian National Dialogue Congress, which will be held in the Russian city of Sochi in late January.
In the statement, Egyptian foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zaid said that Egypt had accepted the invitation to participate in the conference's discussions on how to achieve a political solution and end to the crisis in Syria.
Egypt has maintained its full support for finding a political solution that upholds the Syrian people's freedom of choice and also preserves the Syrian national state.
Around 1,500 participants representing various Syrian political forces are expected to take part in the January event.
In addition, the talks will be attended by observers, primarily from the UN.
The congress will be tasked with, among other things, setting up a commission to draft a new Syrian constitution.
