Three people were killed, including a child and an elderly woman, and 18 others were injured after two building collapsed in Cairo’s Manshiyet Nasser area on Thursday evening, the operation room of Cairo governorate told Ahram Online on Friday.

Relief teams from the Armed Forces and Cairo’s Civil Protection Authority are still searching the rubble for survivors or bodies, the source at Cairo governorate added.

Sixteen of the injured have been released from hospital after they were treated for minor injuries, while two patients are still being treated for a broken pelvis and a nervous breakdown, the source added.

A Cairo prosecution ordered on Friday the formation of an engineering committee to investigate the incident.

Manshiyet Nasser is a densely-populated, working-class district in the eastern part of the city.

The governor of Cairo ordered officials to provide housing to the residents of the collapsed building.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Social Solidarity has formed a relief committee to temporarily place affected residents in a youth center three day. The ministry also alloted EGP 100 to each resident for daily living expenses.
