The first batch of penguins to set foot on Egyptian soil landed at Cairo International Airport on Monday – to be put on display in an indoor ski-resort at The Mall of Egypt, located in the 6th of October district on the outskirts of Cairo.
"Ten penguins underwent veterinary checkups and are set to be transferred in air-conditioned vehicles to their new residence," sources at Cairo airport said.
The first batch of penguins arrived from Japan on a Lufthansa flight, according to the sources.
The Mall of Egypt opened its doors for the first time in March 2017. Since then it has opened several stores over several phases including a winter display called Ski Egypt.
Since the opening of Ski Egypt, social media has been buzzing with inaccurate announcements on the arrival of the unusual visitors.
This is thought to be the first time that the aquatic, flightless birds, who spend much of their lives in the water, have been put on display in the hot and dry country.
