Egypt's Administrative Control Authority (ACA) on Wednesday arrested a number customs officials at Cairo International Airport and employees of an EgyptAir holding company for alleged involvement in a drug and illegal medication smuggling ring.
The defendants have also been accused of receiving bribes from private pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies.
The arrested employees include the head of the assignment department at the EgyptAir Maintenance and Engineering company, a database officer and a head steward.
Also arrested were the head officer at Cairo International Airport's passenger search department and the airport's customs warden.
The ACA further arrested twelve other officials in the same network and seized EGP 6 million worth of illegal drugs and banned medications.
The detained have been referred to prosecution.
