Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed the latest developments in the Libyan crisis with the UN’s special envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, in Cairo on Saturday.

“The meeting came within the framework of ongoing coordination with the UN envoy and Egypt’s keenness to follow up on the developments of the political and security aspects in Libya,” an official foreign ministry statement said.

During the meeting, Shoukry and Salama discussed regional and international efforts aimed at helping solve the Libyan crisis.

The UN envoy also presented recent consultations with various factions to lower tensions, build a national consensus and prepare for elections.

Shoukry discussed Egypt’s position on the latest security and political developments in Libya with Salama.

“Egypt is exerting its utmost efforts to communicate with all the Libyan parties. It also continues to host periodic meetings to unify the military establishment in Libya, which contributes to stability and supports efforts to combat terrorism, arms smuggling and illegal immigration,” stressed Shoukry to Salame, according to the statement.

Shoukry also expressed his concern about the recent deterioration of the security situation in a number of Libyan cities.

In this regard, Shoukry stressed Egypt's support for the mediation led by the UN envoy in order to reach a comprehensive political solution and achieve national reconciliation and unification of the Libyan national institutions, while stressing Egypt’s firm position that the final solution to the crisis should be made by the Libyan people in all of their diversity.
