Egypt has hailed the US-North Korean summit in Singapore as a step in the right direction, saying its positive results would contribute to achieving peace on the Korean peninsula.

"This summit and what it reflects from positive vibes contribute without doubt in building confidence in the Korean peninsula and enforcing the people's wishes in the region to achieve security, stability and development," reads a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry on Tuesday.

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a "comprehensive" document on Tuesday following a historic summit in Singapore aimed at the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

"This is an important and essential step in disarming nuclear weapons worldwide," the Egyptian foreign ministry statement added.

The foreign ministry asserted that Egypt's position on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was still the same, hoping that more international efforts would achieve the aim of that treaty, which is a world free of nuclear weapons.
