Four people were killed and three were injured in a car accident on the Egypt-Alexandria Desert Road on Tuesday.

Six of the victims were members of the same family.

The car collided with a motorcycle that was being driven by a 40-year-old employee of the religious endowments ministry.

The accident resulted in the death of the car's driver, his two-year-old son, his sister-in-law and her six-month-old baby.

The driver's wife and her sister were injured. The driver of motorcycle was also injured.

The injured were transferred to Amreya hospital for treatment, and the deceased were taken to the hospital's morgue.

The prosecution is currently investigating the incident.

Deadly road accidents are not uncommon in Egypt and are mostly attributed to human error, inadequate car maintenance and poor road conditions, according to a report published earlier this year by Egypt's official statistics agency CAPMAS.

CAPMAS said in March, however, that the number of car accidents in the country dropped by 24.5 percent in 2017 to reach 11,098, down from 14,710 accidents the previous year.
