A Giza criminal court ordered on Wednesday the release on bail pending trial of leftist activist Haitham Mohamadein, his lawyer Mohamed Abdel-Aziz said on Twitter.

Mohamadein was arrested in connection to protests in May at a number of Cairo Metro stations against increases in ticket prices.

The court rejected an appeal by the prosecution against a previous ruling ordering Mohamadein and three other defendants in the case to be released on bail on Monday.

The prosecution has charged the defendants with joining an outlawed group, obstructing state authorities and illegal assembly that endangers security and public order.

In early May, authorities arrested several dozen people who were protesting at metro stations over the ticket price hikes.

The prosecution has released all defendants in the case pending trial.
