Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has congratulated Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde, who became the first female president of the country this week.

El-Sisi hailed the trust the Ethiopian parliament has shown in electing Zewde as Ethiopia's new leader.

El-Sisi expressed his "aspiration to further strengthen the relations of cooperation and brotherhood between Egypt and Ethiopia to achieve the common interests of the two countries, and guarantee the two brotherly peoples more development and progress," a statement by presidential spokesman Bassam Rady read.

Zewde, an experienced diplomat, was elected by MPs on Thursday, becoming Africa’s only current female head of state.
