US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke by telephone with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry to discuss bilateral ties and developments in the region, Egypt's foreign ministry said on Friday.
The pair discussed "the importance of pushing forward bilateral relations in the coming period," the ministry said, in a statement published on its official Facebook page.
The pair also discussed preparations to hold talks between the foreign and defence ministers of the two countries, in what is known as a 2+2 dialogue, to "strengthen bilateral relations at all levels," the statement added.
The ministers also discussed recent developments in the region and agreed to intensify coordination about challenges undermining stability in the Middle East.
Egypt is one of Washington's closest allies in the Middle East.
