Tawfik El-Halak, Cairo-based Syrian journalist, claims to have received death threats from supporters of beleaguered Al-Assad regime

Cairo-based Syrian journalist Tawfik El-Halak says he has received death threats from supporters of Syria’s Al-Assad regime.

According to El-Halak, an unknown “informant” recently visited his home in Cairo’s Dokki district and told his wife that Al-Assad supporters “wanted to kill him” for criticising the Syrian regime’s ongoing crackdown against insurgents.

The informant, who expressed admiration for El-Halak’s work but refused to reveal his name to the journalist’s wife, advised them both to leave Egypt “for their own safety,” the journalist claims.

The 62-year-old El-Halak reported the incident to Egyptian police, who have reportedly begun searching for the anonymous visitor.
