Social media networks have a major role in criminal and terrorist operations worldwide, Mohamed Elgendy, the Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Advisor to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said on Thursday.

The UN official made the remarks at the third session of the first Middle Eastern and North African Regional conference for consolidating international cooperation on combating terrorism and money laundering.

Elgendy pointed out to the difficulty of tracking the accounts of social media users, a fact that requires international cooperation with top data companies.

It is hard to control cyberspace as accounts can be opened from anywhere around the world, Elgendy said, adding that such complexity in cyber crimes requires great changes in laws and legislation.
