Egyptian anti-terrorism forces, in cooperation with army engineers, have uncovered and destroyed nine tunnels along the border in North Sinai governorate, the Egyptian armed forces said in a statement on Thursday.

The 30-metre-deep tunnels were used by terrorists to smuggle weapons, ammunition and explosive materials.

Power cables and fuel were found inside the tunnels, the statement added.

Two vehicles used by terrorist, 40 bombs and materials used in manufacturing explosives were destroyed.

The operation, launched based on intelligence information, comes as part of the Armed Forces' efforts to purge North Sinai from terrorism.
