Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will fly to the Tunisian capital on Friday for preparatory meetings of the 30th Arab League summit, the Egyptian foreign ministry said.

The meetings are planned to "discuss issues of joint Arab cooperation and ways to deal with various regional challenges and crises," the ministry said in a statement.

The Arab League Summit is scheduled to be held on Sunday 31 March.

The summit is expected to work to reach consensus over Syria’s membership of the Arab League, which was suspended in 2011 following the crackdown on anti-government protesters at the start of the country's civil war.

The trip comes as Shoukry wrapped up a multi-day visit to Washington, where he held talks on bilateral ties and regional threats with a number of US congressmen.
