A US court jailed a Virginia man for life on Thursday for the rape and murder of an Egyptian-American teenage girl.

Darwin Martinez Torres, 25, was sentenced to life without parole for the rape and murder of 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen in June 2017.

Hassanen, the daughter of  Egyptian immigrants, was kidnapped, beaten and killed after she and her friends were chased near their mosque in Virginia during Ramadan as they were getting a pre-dawn meal.

In November 2018, Torres pleaded guilty to eight charges, including capital murder and rape, in a plea deal that spared him the death penalty.

US authorities say that there was no evidence to indicate it was a crime of hate.
