German Minister of Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas hailed on Monday Egypt's mediation efforts, alongside the United Nations, to reach a ceasefire deal to end three-day battles between Palestinian factions and Israel, which have left at least 23 people killed in the Gaza Strip.

Minister Maas underscored the necessity of the immediate implementation of and a full adherence to the Egypt-brokered Gaza ceasefire.

A Gaza truce could form a base for containing the volatile situation, the minister said, attaching great importance to implementing a deal sealed by the Palestinian and Israeli sides last March to provide Israel with the security guarantees it needs and take tangible steps to improve the living conditions in the Palestinian enclave.

Maas further expressed his country's eagerness to back all overtures meant to eliminate conflicts, as well as efforts aimed at upholding the two-state solution and reaching a permanent and just peace in the Middle East.
