A Giza criminal court acquitted on Thursday former interior minister Habib El-Adly and eight other top ministry officials in their retrial on charges of embezzling public funds.
The court also sentenced one defendant to three years imprisonment and ordered that he pay restitution of EGP 62 million, and dismissed him from his job.
In April 2017, a Cairo criminal court convicted El-Adly and 10 other codefendants on charges of embezzling interior ministry funds amounting to EGP 2.38 billion.
At the time, El-Adly received seven years in prison and six other defendants were sentenced to five years. El-Adly and nine others were ordered to pay EGP 529 million in restitution and were fined the same amount, in addition to the dismissal of all defendants from their jobs.
However, upon appeal, the Court of Cassation overturned the sentence and ordered a retrial.
