A police officer and six conscripts were killed on Tuesday night as police forces fended off an attack by terrorists against police positions southwest of the city of El-Arish in North Sinai, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement.
The confrontations also led to the killing of four of the terrorists, with an explosive belt carried by one of the attackers detonating.
The assailants were found in possession of explosive belts, automatic weapons and hand grenades, the statement added.
"Police are currently chasing these terrorist elements," the statement said.
The High State Security Prosecution has opened an investigation.
